The Freshman Application is Now Open! - UGA Undergraduate Admissions

The Freshman Application is Now Open! - UGA Undergraduate Admissions The Freshman Application is Now Open! We have now opened up the Summer/Fall 2012 Freshman Application! As I have stated in previous posts, this does not mean you should stop whatever you are doing and submit the application as quickly as possible. Please do not do this! Instead, make sure that you have all the information you will need prior to submitting your application, such as verifying your SSN, having a copy of your transcript and a resume so that you can complete all of the information needed without errors or gaps. A majority of students who apply right after we open up the application then end up contacting our office to fix mistakes they made by rushing through the application. Here are a few items you want to make sure you complete correctly: Make sure you have put your name in correctly. Your name called/nickname should only list Bob, not Bob James Smith, your SSN NEEDS to be correct for our office and financial aid, and your address needs to be right for both mailing information to you and for Residency purposes. If you are a citizen of the United States, mark citizen. A Permanent Resident is a person with an Alien Registration Card/Green Card, not anyone who lives permanently in the U.S. When listing your high school, do the search process so that your high schools code will drop in correctly and will not slow down us importing the application. In addition, if you have attended multiple high schools, list your current one first. Please list your senior year courses in the area provided, and you can shorthand course names/titles. This helps us in our review of your file. Your HS counselor can only complete the online HS Evaluation form once you submit your application (so please do not wait until the last minute!), and you will be asked to give your counselors email to alert them that you have applied. They will also be able to see this on the UGA HS Counselor Portal, and we will keep the online HS evaluation form open for about a week after the deadline. The SAT/ACT/AP score area on the application is for our general knowledge about you, but we need the official scores to be sent to us. The deadline for Early Action for the SAT/ACT is to take the exam by the Early Action deadline of October 15, and to request the score by October 15. If you have any conduct or conviction issues, please be specific about the situation. As well, we do not need to know about minor traffic tickets, if you had ISS in middle school, etc. In the Activities sections, please do not leave this blank thinking that we will never look at it. This area is important in scholarship review, when we are in our holistic review process, if we need to know more about you, etc. Read the self-reported grades description in detail before completing this section. We are looking at your core course grades from 9th grade on, as well as how many of the grades you list are from AP/IB courses, and how many total AP/IB courses you will have completed by your HS graduation. Do not hit the submit button unless you are sure that you (and your parents!) are ready to submit the application! Remember that the online credit card payment option is only available from 7 am 9:30 pm EST UGA only has an online application, so we do not accept any paper applications that are submitted. Do not fax our office any updates, corrections, etc. We do not like faxes! Remember that there is no admissions advantage to submitting your application on the first day it goes live. UGA will look at you the same way as any other student who applies by the deadline, so being the first application in does not give you any bonus points. While I do not suggest waiting until the week of the deadline to apply (too many risks of problems/errors), I suggest you take your time completing the application and making sure all the information is correct before submitting it. Go Dawgs!

Psychoanalytic Theory on Dacula - 1360 Words

Andy Dodge English 271 Marxist Approach of Dracula 12/17/10 According to Dictionary.com, a vampire is â€Å"a corpse, animated by an undeparted soul or demon, that periodically leaves the grave and disturbs the living, until it is exhumed and impaled or burned.† Our society’s view of Vampires has unfortunately been tarnished by several novels that shall remain nameless. Bram Stoker’s Dracula, however, is an excellent novel that shows just how menacing vampires should be. More importantly, it is a classic book that can provide many different readings and analyses. By using a Marxist approach, elements of this book can be easily compared to the oppression and eventual overthrow of a dictatorship style government. Dracula’s presence is directly affecting Team Van Helsing by turning Lucy into a vampire and also by instilling fear of death into the group. The oppression continues after that. Mina was also bitten by Dracula as well. In addition to bein g bitten, she was forced to drink his blood. In addition to being physically oppressed by Dracula, she is also hurt by him when he is not present. Stoker writes As he placed the Wafer on Mina s forehead, it had seared it - had burned into the

Essay about The Events That Changed Military Technology

Military technology and strategies have constantly evolved throughout history. However, within the last few centuries, the world has seen warfare evolve at such a rapid rate, that it seems no two wars are fought the same. With ever-changing technologies, soldiers’ duties and skills have had to adapt along with them. Yet, soldiers are not the only ones who have been affected by changes in warfare. With the emergence of the Napoleonic and World Wars, the people of a given country became involved in an effort known as a â€Å"total war.† As World War II came to an end though, the major powers in the world would never again get into a â€Å"total war.† All in all, many technological advances and tactics, in recent history, have dramatically†¦show more content†¦Another aspect that aided Napoleon in this process was the belief in patriarchy. He had instilled the idea of a male dominated society throughout France, so women felt that their role was to ai d the men in anyway that they could. Napoleon not only changed the way wars were fought off the battlefield, but he was also revolutionary in battlefield tactics. Napoleon believed that strength was in attacking, so he would take his troops and march straight toward a country’s capital, crushing all opposition in his way. Once Napoleon and his troops reached the capital, they would force the government to surrender, and the battle would be over. This ensured him the least amount of resistance and casualties (Buzard, 2006). Perhaps one of the most influential aids in the development in warfare came during the industrial revolution. No longer were guns, ammunition, uniforms etc. made strictly by skilled workers. Large factories allowed for mass production of goods. Weapons were standardized, and became more advanced. Food was manufactured in large quantities. â€Å"Total War† was truly possible now because no longer did men have to stay and harvest crops to feed their families because machinery took the place of manual labor. World War I came on the heels of the industrial revolution. J. (2012). Transformation: the Progression of Immigration Petitions for Transgender Spouses. Family Court Review, 50(4), 666-678. Why humans are responsible for evil not Satan By tearsshaven As an ancient chinese proverb said , â€Å"A good man lives a hundred years but an evil man lives a thousand years. Dating from histories to the current world, we are constantly bombarded with news, scandals and histories of people being exposed of their evil often only when the damage had been dealt to their victims. Most religions would accuse this evil influence on demons and Satan brainwashing humans. However, despite these accusations, have we paused to ponder if these actions were really influenced from a su pernatural force or created from our psychological brains in the realms of our conscience ? For example , Muammar Gaddafi, the past ruler and politician of Librayan, claimed he was trying to equalize the status of women with men but in truth , he commited atrocities and rape. He proclaimed to treat women and men equally and had his elite bodyguards entirely only women as proof. He was even described as a strict , holy nd religious Islamist. However , in the shadowy depts of deceit, he raped and abused them to fulfil his perverted desires. It was only after his death did the abused victims revealed the horrifying ordeals they suffered. Lets look into the case of Miley Cyrus . In 2013 , she did a controversial and raunchy dance with Robin Thicke at the VMAS. It sparked outrage among parents and the Christians from Miley’s hometown claimed that she had been influenced by the devil . The same could be said for Katy Perry when her Dad , a pastor in a Church, accused her of being influenced by the devil when she performed provocative music ideos. If we analyse this matter without being subjective with religious views, we would see that Miley and Katy Perry’s actions were techniques to gain the most attention and fame in the shortest amount of time. Why does Katy Perry , a mere music star , have more followers on Twitter than Barack Obama who is President to United States , the most important country in the World ? Sadly , young sex Just sells. The psychological need in humans is sex. Most people are more interested in her luscious figure in the MVs than to know about Barack Obama and the World. No one nfluenced us to follow them on Twitter , we are Just driven by our instincts to the appealing image. Who were the ones who created porn websites ? The spirits didn’t, the Devil didn’t, humans did it. Why did we do it ? We are built to have sex and reproduce. Why are so many rapes commited? The rapists were desperate in their needs, unable to control and they were always known to be porn addicts. In the modern world, it is indispensable that we control our sexual instincts as what humanity perceives as ‘not being an animal’ and having a sense of morality. Men that go to postitues are Judged s horny and perverted men while postitues and porn stars are labelled as whore relieve thier human instincts and finding postitutes seemed the only option available. Based on the Indian Movie known as Silk , a bollywood actress named Silk gains fame and fortune by flaunting her body and promoting sexual appeal much to the digust of other conservative Indian women . Men , however, flocked to see her but treated her only as a sex toy . In their conscience , they only saw her as an appealing sex tool who had no respect for herself. In the end , she committed suicide from the pressure he faced and the toyed love she had. Most of the revered Hindus there also said she was a dirty soul who would fall into hell for disobeying the law of the Gods for flaunting sex. Yet this is only what humans think. The Bible and other Holy Books were all written by humans . Whether they had really written it as orders from God , no one is 100% sure as we do not have concrete evidence that there is God. We could have also been the ones who invented God . When the Holy Wars were declared and the fighters were determined to shed holy blood in the name of their God , how could they not stop to think if it was Just enseless bloodsheds ? As quoted from Woodrow Wilson , â€Å"War isn’t declared in the name of God ; it is a human affair entirely†. We shouldn’t account our actions in the name of Gods , we have have account it to ourselves. We were influenced to worship God by ourselves. Look at Reetah Parson and Amanda Todd’s case , both were Jovial and nice people who were destroyed by ‘evil’ people . They both reported the abuse to the Police but were taken for lightly. in addition , their classmates and others Joined in to bully and humiliate them because the bullies felt disgusted with them. The teachers were round and acted as if they were oblivious to the bullying. In the end , both Reetah and Amanda committed suicide from overwhelming pressure and depression . It was only after their tragedy was reported in the news did the Police did a through investigation. The online pages in memory of the girls also gained many sympathies and people who said they would have been friends with them to protect them from the bullies had they known. Previously , the dead girls had their Facebook profiles filled with malicious comments from friends , classmates and other people asking them to die. Edmund Berke once said, † For evil to flourish , good men must do nothing. â€Å". The tragedies occured because the adults didnt take actions to help them. No one offered to help the girls and everyonr Just watched Reetah and Amanda being bullied. The Devil didn’t stage this incident. It was all due to human actions and their level of conscience. The bullies did it because they thought it was fun. They didnt have the conscience to consider how the victims would feel. Is it ironic that we curse the Devil for the misfortunes and evil in this World when Satan punishes the evil doers for us ? We also praise the Lord for good things that happen and lament when our prayers are not answered. Good things happen with great effort. You don’t get good grades Just by praying to God and not study. † When you look into the sky , you dont look for God , you look in yourself. † as quoted from Alan Watts. Evil things happen with human actions . You backstab your collegue to without your conscience. Don’t blame others for your deeds. If God is up there , why does he let so many good people suffer ? Abraham Lincoln was assassinated for trying to help the Blacks , Junko Furuta was brutally mutilated hen she had done nothing wrong ? Pow Wow Highway free essay sample

Highway I enjoyed this movie, based on a book by the same name by Davis Seals, a Native activist. The story is based in the mid to late 1970’s and begins on the Northern Cheyenne Tribe’s reservation in Lame Deer, Montana. The two lead characters, Buddy Red Bow (A. Martinez) and his acquaintance (who later in the film becomes his friend), Philbert â€Å"Phil† Bono (Gary Farmer) travel to Santa Fe to rescue Buddy’s sister, Bonnie Red Bow who has been wrongfully jailed. Buddy finds out that his estranged sister has two small girls and he is determined to bring her back home to the reservation and get her out of jail. Philbert is a free spirit who sees visions and is very gentle natured. He is more in tune with the ancient traditions of their Tribe, stopping frequently to pray and meditate. Buddy Red Bow is antagonistic at first and very impatient with Philbert, but in time he starts to lose his inhibitions about praying and meditating and eventually joins Philbert in embracing the ancient chants and meditating. We will write a custom essay sample on Pow Wow Highway or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Although Buddy doesn’t see any visions like Philbert does, he respects Phil’s insights and stops complaining, eventually joining him in calling out to the spirits on their frequent stops. The plot of the story is simple enough to follow. Buddy’s sister was wrongfully arrested in Santa Fe, and she was set up as a ploy by some strip mining developer goons back on the res in Montana to keep Buddy Red Bow (the activist who’s opposed to the strip mining) off the reservation so they can get the other tribe members to give them a favorable vote so they can proceed to exploit tribal land. There are several underlying messages that become evident as you are watching the film that are begging to be noticed by the film’s director, Jonathan Wacks. Most of them are to direct the attention of the viewer as to the assimilation of the Native Americans and just how far reaching the assimilation has gone. One of the most notable scenes is how Philbert reacts to the commercial for the used cars, where the car salesman imitates stereotypical Indian words â€Å"How folks! † â€Å"We got Heap-Big Savings†. Phil was curious instead of offended and actually bought a car from the salesman, referring to it as a fine pony and then naming the old beat-up car, â€Å"Protector†. It’s heartbreaking when Philbert goes to see the medicine woman to get advice on how to go after his medicine and she ridicules him, showing him how bitter she is at their predicament. He nevertheless moves forward with his journey so that he can become a warrior. It’s his perseverance and serenity that is most endearing in this film. The beginning of the film shows the stark poverty of the reservation, making the HUD housing look luxurious compared to some of the tin lean-to’s that were being lived in. Also, the reservation seems abandoned, even showing tumbleweeds blowing by, but in the next scene shows almost everyone on the reservation are at the local bar, playing pool, drinking and smoking. It also depicts the two extreme differences in the character’s personalities – Buddy Red Bow being the volatile, hot-tempered activist and Philbert as the mild mannered and generous spirited mystic. Philbert is on his own quest to find his Medicine and Buddy is on a quest to rescue his sister. Because the two of them have lived on the reservation all their lives, Philbert remembers Buddy’s sister and offers his assistance and they take his â€Å"war pony†, the beat up Buick to go rescue her and her children. Along the way, they stop several times and there are many sad scenes that are lightly covered with humor. One such scene is where Phil stops off at one of the most sacred spots to climb to the top while Buddy sleeps in the car. He makes it to the top and opens a large candy bar to eat it then recognizes the colorful ribbons tied to the branches that mark the spot as sacred. He then carefully re-wraps the candy bar and offers it to the Spirits next to the ribbons. Another sad moment of assimilation is when the children had newly escaped from the CPS office and they asked a native woman for some money to call their mother’s friend, Rabbit. While on the phone with Rabbit, they had to sk which tribe they were from because they had no idea that they even belonged to a tribe much less that there was such a thing as a tribe, and not just â€Å"Indians† that existed because when the elderly woman gave them money for the call, she asked them which tribe they belonged to. The film is about a journey with a lot of meaning behind it. It was a way for each of them to find themselves and assess what is truly important in their lives and the need for them to get more in tune with their culture and customs.

Cuban Misile Crisis essays

Cuban Misile Crisis essays The sixties were one of the most exciting time periods in American history. The ideas of a new generation started a cultural revolution, U.S. citizens enjoyed a high standard of living, and the country was in the middle of the Cold War. The Cold War saw no shots fired, but threatened to devastate the U.S. and USSR, as well as the rest of the world into nuclear holocaust. On October 16, 1962 U.S. U-2 spy planes discovered Soviet missiles in Cuba. Although the U.S. had been assured by Soviet leaders that they wouldn't place missiles in Cuba they had secretly. America had to take action to protect its security and to show the USSR that we wouldnt be pushed around. On Tuesday morning, October 16, 1962 President Kennedy called together his cabinet to discuss the crisis. Over the next thirteen days the Kennedy Administration made many difficult decisions, which I believe were highly effective. John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born in Brookline, Massachusetts in 1917. He attended Princeton University and Harvard University. JFK served in the Navy during WWII and afterwards started his political career. In 1961 he was elected as the youngest President ever as well as the first Roman Catholic President. Kennedys cabinet appointments included Dean Rusk as secretary of state, Robert McNamara as secretary of defense, Douglas Dillon as secretary of the treasury, as well as Robert F. Kennedy as attorney general. These men, as well as many others including the joint chiefs of staffs, were all part of ExComm (the Executive Committee of the National Security Council). ExComm was the committee responsible for all of the decision making during the Cuban Missile. As soon as the missiles were discovered in Cuba ExComm met to discuss what action America would take to not only defend itself from attack but to also stop the shipment of missiles to Cuba. The USSR had strongly defended themselves in past months stating that th ...
